Beauty Tips – Picking the Right Sunscreen

Just because you’re not from Hawaii doesn’t necessarily mean that you should not wear sunscreen year round. In fact, skin cancer affects many in parts of the world where there’s not much sun. That is why it is so important to wear sunscreen year round to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays. Living in Hawaii often means trying different sunscreens throughout the year. So what makes a sunscreen good, and how do you go about picking the right type of sunscreen for your skin?

You want to choose a sunscreen that is a broad spectrum sunscreen, meaning it protects you from both UVA and UVB rays. There are many ingredients in sunscreens, so how do you know which ones should be included? Well, read the labels, to protect your skin you will want a sunscreen that contains one of the following ingredients, or a combination of these ingredients:

ecamsule
avobenzone
oxybenzone
titanium dioxide
sulisobenzone
zinc oxide

Many consumers are concerned with harmful ingredients and chemicals that are included in sunscreens. If you are one of these people, then you should choose a sunscreen that has zinc oxide, or titanium dioxide as these are more natural ingredients.

SPF is calculated in general by assuming a normal person burns in 10 minutes. SPF 15 would mean that your sun exposure can be 15 times the normal 10 minutes before you burn, so an SPF 15 would mean that generally speaking you could last in the sun for 150 minutes without burning. Now this is a general rule, and you might burn faster so a sunscreen with a higher SPF might be better for you. Most dermatologists will agree that a SPF higher than 50 is not more effective than SPF 50, so this is the highest level of SPF that you should consider buying.

There are all kinds of sunscreens out on the market, so it comes down to your skin type and personal preference. There are many sunscreens that can be worn daily, that are waterproof or sweat proof. Here are some sunscreens that we like:

Homemade Sugar Scrub

There’s a lot of preparation that goes into looking beautiful for any special occasion. In the days, or even weeks ahead of your special day, it’s good to get a nice skin regimen going, to help insure your skin looks fresh and beautiful on your special day. There are many things you can do in preparation to ensure your skin looks its best for whatever special occasion. Here is a simple sugar scrub recipe that you can make and use at home to help exfoliate and moisturize your skin so that it has a healthy glow when it’s time for your event.

Sugar Scrub Ingredients:

Granulated Sugar or if you have really sensitive skin use Brown Sugar
Oil – Choose your own, coconut, olive, almond etc.

You will want to mix one part oil to two parts sugar. You can start off with as little as a tablespoon of sugar and adding half the amount of oil to it and mix it. Do not be surprised if your oil separates to the bottom of the container as it is almost impossible to to keep them mixed together. If you want you can also add a fragrant essential oil if you want your scrub to smell. Just add a few drops to the mixture.

To use the scrub, either in the shower or bath after washing, slather on your body and rub onto skin. Let the scrub do the exfoliating and do not over scrub yourself by putting added pressure. Rinse off the scrub and you will be left with soft glowing skin all over.

Hair Questions Answered

Hawaii makeup artist Monae Watkins often gets asked many questions about hair, and tips on how to have beautiful hair everyday, as well as what is considered “normal” when it comes to hair. Here are many of your hair questions finally answered.

Q: How much hair loss is normal? Every time I shower I have to unplug the drain because my hair stops the water from draining. Is this amount of hair loss normal?

A: It is most likely that the amount of hair loss you are experiencing is normal. An average person can shed up to 120 strands of hair per day. If you have long hair, this will definitely look like a lot of hair plugged up in the drain, but don’t be alarmed this is natural. Each strand of your hair has a shelf life, and when it’s time to expire, there is another hair in place that is ready to sprout out. There are a number of products that will help to make your hair appear thicker. You can also style your hair by adding mousse to your wet hair and blow drying with a round brush. Here are some hair thickening products.

Q: I can’t seem to grow my hair out. Is it true that hair stops growing at a certain length?

A: Hair goes through a growth period, or cycle. This will normally last anywhere from 2 – 6 years, and depending on your individual cycle, and if your hair cycle last 6 years, then you will be able to grow your hair out long before it falls out naturally. If your hair’s growth cycle is only 2 years, then it is much harder for it to grow long. There are a few supplements you can take to help keep your hair healthy – biotin and zinc both contribute to healthy hair. Also getting a trim every two months will help keep ends healthy and promote growth.

Q: How will the aging process affect my hair?

A: Other than going grey, aging has many affect on your hair. Your bodies hormone levels have a huge impact on the quality of your hair. When we’re young and going through puberty, our bodies are producing more hormones making our skin and hair more oily. This is why when you’re young your hair is shiny and soft. As we age and our bodies produce less hormones we can expect our hair to appear less shiny over time. OUr hair may also begin to thin out and appear much more dry. To combat the signs of aging, try not to over brush your hair, or blow dry your hair.

Fall 2012 Hair Trends

With it being the last week of summer, you can bet there are some new and emerging trends for the upcoming fall season. Here are some of the most trendiest hair styles for 2012.

The first trend is the perfected ponytail. This is a sleek, clean, polished ponytail. You should spend some time perfecting this look, as it is supposed to look sleek. This style can be worn either up high, or low. Here are some great examples of this fall trend

Bangs are back in style this season. There’s not a particular type of bang that is favored this season however, the thick blunt bang is very popular, and has been this year as seen on Jessica Biel and other Hollywood actresses. This season bangs can be blunt, or soft and swept to the side. Here are some trending bangs.

Icy blondes will be a great trend this fall 2012 season, as the summer bronzy look will fade with the season, so does the tone of blond. The golden sun kissed blonds should transition to a more whiter, icy looking blond to match the season.

Great Beauty Secrets

Hawaii makeup artist Monae Watkins has many years experience with making women beautiful. There are many beauty secrets that she’s acquired and she would like to share those with you. Here they are.

A woman’s age is sometimes reflected very easily by looking at her hands. A great tip to make your hands look much younger is to apply concealer to your hands to hide any freckles, sun spots or other signs of aging.

To add length to your lashes, properly apply mascara using the tip of the brush. First apply a coat of mascara holding the mascara brush parallel to your lashes. Wiggle the brush back and forth as you coat your lashes from lid to tips. Then, using the tip of the brush add even more length to individual lashes by extending the brush from your tips upward, like illustrated in the picture below.

A great way to look younger is to add a healthy glow to your skin. This is possible without having to spend time in the sun, and sometimes the sun is not available anyways. You can use a lotion with bronzer and apply to your body to add a healthy glow, or us a moisturizer on your face that has some bronzer in it to instantly make you look alive with healthy glowing skin.

Makeup Techniques – How to make your Lips look Fuller

Hawaii makeup artist Monae Watkins specializes in making her clients look beautiful for their weddings and other special occasions. A lot of times clients will ask questions relating to makeup techniques. One of the questions she always gets asked is how to make your lips appear fuller. Here are a few tricks you can do to make your lips appear fuller.

You might not realize this but applying dark colors to your lips can actually make them appear thinner! To make your lips appear fuller try using lighter, softer, almost skin toned colors. You can apply your lipstick and after your lipstick is applied line your lips with a brush and the same color lipstick. Apply a layer of clear lip gloss on top. To finalize the look, apply a very subtle amount of white eyeliner using a brush just on the outside of your lipstick. This will define your lips and make them appear much fuller than they are. Here is the final look.
